Most of the table games had traffic as patrons continued to play blackjack, roulette and craps. My job for the past many years has involved writing the software that runs casino slot machines and their back end systems (player's club software and most recently server based gaming systems). I have experience not just with the software, but also with the on-site operations of multiple casinos - as I've had to go on-site to fix issues at times.

If you are looking for a guaranteed way of winning when you play slots then you are in the right place. The good news is that we are not going to charge you for this information but the bad news is that there is no system, strategy or scheme that will guarantee you will win every time you play slots. This is a fact based on how slot machines really work.

While there is no guaranteed system this has not stopped unscrupulous people trying to make money by selling systems to uninformed players. Most of these systems fit into one of two categories.

  • Systems based on locating 'hot' machine or what you see on the reels
  • Systems based on how you bet

The first category of systems tries to make you believe that you can walk into any casino and locate the slots that are about to pay out. This is either based on the machines locations or based on the symbols that are on the reels.

While there may be some advantage playing only the machines with the highest payout percentages even this does not guarantee that you will win in the short term. The placement of slots in a casino changes regularly and without seeing the audit sections of the machines there is no way of knowing what a specific games payout percentage is or finding the slots with the highest RTP.

Systems based on what you see on the reels such as the Zig Zag System are also useless. All you are seeing on the reels are the results of the last spin. If you know how slot machines work then you will also know that the results of the last spin have no relation to the next spin. Each spin is totally independent so picking games based on what is on the reels is no guarantee of winning.

The second type of slot systems focuses on how you bet rather than anything else. Again if you know how slots work you will also be aware of the fact that the amount you bet has no effect on what happens on the reels in terms of what symbols appear. Some systems suggest cycling between one, two and three coins. This won't do anything in terms of helping you win and can be disastrous if you are playing a progressive slot where maximum bet is required for the jackpot.

Other systems involve changing your bet levels based on losing and winning spins. The most common system of this type is the Martingale system where you increase your bets as you are losing in the hope of winning the loss back. This type of system is more commonly used on 50/50 bets such as red or black on a roulette game but are sometimes suggested for slots. The problem with this type of system is that if you have multiple losses in a row you will hit the top bet limit and even if you win you are only winning your losses back which is not really a win.
